Our client challenge was to quickly refresh an established movie theater located across from the Hard Rock Cafe in Universal Studios Hollywood’s Universal CityWalk. Our palette was limited to surface treatments with no major construction other than the removal of a decorative “header” that hung over the entry.
We transformed the experience with just surface treatments of colorful paint, carpet, linoleum, printed vinyl banners, glittering concrete, and bespoke signage. Drawing from California’s iconic sunsets and a core element of movie-going, the design transforms the Universal Studios Hollywood AMC Theatre into an immersive experience. The theatre corridors are colors of the sunset; saturated and intense. The flooring concept is derived from the Los Angeles freeways with swerving and steady lines. The main lobby balcony explodes with three dimensional popcorn enticing and delighting movie-goers.
This is the first project that I led, while at Sussman/Prejza & Co. managing the design team while leading client relationship, fabrication, and installation.
